The reel is a (A style of dancing that originated among ordinary people (not in the royal courts)) folk dance type as well as the accompanying (Click link for more info and facts about dance tune type) dance tune type.
All reels have the same structure, consisting largely of quaver movement with an accent on the first and third beats of the bar.
Reels are popular in the folk music of South West (A division of the United Kingdom) England.

 Virginia Reel
One of the oldest dances enjoyed in the New World by the colonists (and it just might be the oldest) is the 'Virginia Reel'.
Versions of the Virginal Reel can be seen in scores of movies depicting the colonial period in American history on through the great movement to settle the west and even movies depicting today's country settings.
This is continued, each swinging the next in line until they reach the foot of the lines, where they swing each other half way around with right arms linked, so that the lady finished on her own side and the man on the men's side.

dance: Champlin MS, 1781; tune: Hawkins MS, etc.; the Champlin MS was written by Peggy Chanuplin after she had danced with George Washington in Newport in 1781; it has been lost, but parts of it were published by a descendant, George Champlin Mason in 1884.
dance & tune: Thompsonfi 1769; this dance, which was presumably devised in 1734, the year Handel's Opera II Pastor Fido was revived, is listed as one of three dances danced at the Turtle Frolic at Newport In 1752, many years before it was published, and was mentioned in Peggy Champlin's MS of 1781.
It is merely one of many dances that were described at the time as Virginia Reels; perhaps the term meant any dance with reels of some sort in it that was not a Scots foursome reel.

This is normally danced to tunes in common time (32 bar and the dance is 64 bars long) but can be and is sometimes done to jigs (6/8 tempo).
Both lines dance forwards, one line raising their hands in an arch and the other line dancing underneath, and dance on to meet the next set of three coming in the other direction.
This seems actually to be a family of similar dances - probably word-of-mouth having lead to variations.

From the responses received on the list, she realised she had been had, so to turn the tables on him, it was suggested that a "Cotton Reel" be written.
